Rev. Walter Osmund Larson
(OBIT) The Rev. Walter O. Larson, 81, of LaCrosse died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Hillview Health Care Center.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 16, 1925, to Osmund T. and Anna M. Larson. He attended the public schools of New York City, graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1944. He then entered the Army and served in the American and Pacific Theatres during World War II before being honorably discharged in 1946. He then was employed by the New York Telephone Co. until 1948 when he entered Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, graduating in 1952. He was then employed by the Chemical Bank and Trust Co. of New York until September 1953 when he was admitted to Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, graduating in 1957.
The Rev. Larson was ordained at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1957, and was installed as assistant pastor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in LaCrosse later that year, where he served until 1966. He served as pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Skogdalen Lutheran Church in Westby, Wis., from 1966 until 1972. From 1972 until 1980, he served as pastor at Wellington Park Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, before moving on to Stoughton, Wis., where he served as pastor at West Koshkonong Lutheran Church until 1984, and then as chaplain at Skaalen Sunset Home in Stoughton from 1984 until 1993. After moving to LaCrosse, Pastor Larson served as the visitation pastor at English Lutheran Church until 1996.
Survivors include his wife, the former Edna Larson, whom he married May 18, 1966, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in LaCrosse; sisters-in-law, Marge Larson (Mrs. Arthur) and Joan Larson (Mrs. Lawrence), both of New Jersey, Mildred Larson of LaCrosse and Margaret Husman and her husband, Wayne, of LaCrescent, Minn.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Arthur and Lawrence, and an infant brother, Oliver.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at English Lutheran Church in LaCrosse. The Revs. Mark Solyst, Duane Baardseth and Kent Johnson will officiate. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of LaCrosse is assisting the family with arrangements.
